Power chords are also known as 5th chords. They are essential to many guitar players. Many 5th chords are similar to regular major bar chords. How do we find one without using chart?


1. Memorize the natural notes on the first 3 strings of the fretboard.


Most power chords begin on the first 3 low sounding strings of the guitar.


2. Get a general idea where the non-natural notes are located.


You must get a general idea where the flatted and sharped notes are located. If you look at the guitar power chords chart and see the D note then you know the note above it is the C sharp note.


3. Look at the guitar fretboard chart and pick a note.


Let's say you picked a B note. You would find the B note and then look for an power chord shape whose root note is the same. For example let's say you chose the B note on the A string. You look on the guitar power chords chart and see that one power chord shape has root notes on the A string. You make this chord shape with the root note on the A string 2nd fret. You know have a B 5 chord. Remember it's a B 5 bar chord.


4. Open power chords are the exception.


Some 5th chords cannot be found using root notes and the guitar fretboard chart. These are known as open 5th chords. They can be quite useful in getting that thick sound just like bar 5th chords. You can find some open 5th chords by looking at the links near the top of the page.

We must choose a major scale which has the same letter name as the chord. For example, let's look at the C major scale and create a C 5 chord. First beginners should learn open chords, all power chords, basic note reading and memorize the guitar fretboard chart.
